Breastfeeding my baby is one of my favorite things to do. It’s such a sweet moment that no one else will ever experience with her. It gives us time to relax, bond and allows me to nourish my child. I love when she pauses nursing, looks up into my eyes and smiles then goes back to the breast. It’s as if she just had to stop and say “Oh hi mom, I love you.” It just melts my purple pumping heart.
The first 2 months I was really good about pumping everyday to buildup a freezer supply. My plan is to work one day a week so I knew we would need a stock pile of milk, plus sometimes its nice to run errands alone for more than 2-3 hours. Plus, I love the special bonding moment I share with Ella when I’m nursing and wanted my husband to be able to feel that with her by feeding her a bottle
Well! Today, after probably 2-2.5 weeks of not pumping I was only able to pump 2 oz.. total! Before I was averaging MUCH more than that. I don’t feel my supply is dropping super low, Ella seems content after each nursing session and her chubby cheeks and thighs are evident that she is gaining weight. I just feel like maybe I could be producing more milk.
So of course to Pinterest I went. There are TONS of lactation cookie recipes. And they are a little intimidating…brewers yeast? Fenugreek?? In a cookie??? Sure, I’ll try it. Off to the local Co-op I went. I’m not going to sugarcoat it… these ingredients are not going to be cheap, but a little goes a long way and they will last you many batches of cookies. Brewers yeast, Fenugreek and Oats are the power trio in this cookie recipe, they are known galactagogues. Galacto-whaaaaa? Galactagogues are substances that increase milk supply. They work for some people and some don’t. I find they work for me. After a few days of eating these cookies my supply went right back up. A word of warning… fenugreek can make you smell like maple syrup. Weird. My husband said I smelled sweet, so i guess that’s good right?
4 tbsp of water
2 tbsp flaxseed meal
2 cups flour (I used a gluten free all purpose)
4 tbsp of brewer’s yeast
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
8 fenugreek capsules (discard empty capsules)
1 cup butter (you can sub 1/2 cup coconut oil, 1/2 cup butter), softened
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 cups of thick cut oats
1 cup chocolate chips
1. Preheat the oven to 375 deg.
2. Mix flaxseed and water, set aside.
3. Mix dry ingredients together (flour, brewers yeast, salt, baking soda and fenugreek)
4. In a separate bowl blend butter and sugars well (I used my stand mixer)
5. Blend in eggs one at a time, stir in flax mix and vanilla.
6. Slowly add in dry ingredient mixture and stir by hand.
7. Stir in oats and chocolate chips (you could also use raisins, etc)
8. Place on cookie sheet 1 inch apart and bake for 10-15 minutes (until golden brown on the edges).
9. When cooled, hide from husband.
The cookies will keep in the freezer really well. I will probably eat 3-4 cookies throughout the day. I recommend making them when your husband is not home then immediately hiding them in the freezer. Your husband will not believe your trickery when you tell him they will make him lactate…
