We bought property! Yes! It’s official Chris and I are the proud owners of a piece of beautiful land.
As I’ve mentioned before, Chris and I (and Ella) live in an absolutely lovely, but small, craftsman style house on an equally lovely corner lot in the city. It’s literally the perfect house for a couple. Adding a baby into the mix…. things get tight… add a toddler.. and it’s a war zone. I’m not saying it can’t be done. I’m saying I’d rather not chance it!
Buying a piece of land and building a home has always been a dream of ours. We knew once we had Ella we would only stay in this house for max 2 years. We want her to grow up playing outside, building things and having the ability to run free and not have super tight boundaries (or get hit by a car). We’ve been casually looking for property but not too aggressively as we know we have time. Chris and I really wanted to find the “perfect” piece of land where we could raise Ella for the next (at least) ten years.
A couple of years back Chris’s mom bought land and built a house in an area we soon fell in love with as well. It’s on a
mountain hill above a lake and is so quiet and peaceful. Chris and I talked about how we really liked the area but thought it was too far from town. We then timed it and it’s only a 7 minute drive from where we currently live! So not far at all! Like I mentioned its very close to a big lake. It will be so nice to take our paddle boards down anytime we want. I’d say we are a 1 minute drive from the lake and a 15 minute walk. Although, the walk home, up the hill would probably kill us all.
The lot we found is five acres. It’s mostly wooded with beautiful mature trees, ferns galore and even a HUGE boulder that Ella (and dad) can climb. There are trees for rope swings and tree forts, trails for exploring and just the magic that comes from growing up OUTSIDE. The minute I stepped onto the property I could see Ella growing up there. I could feel it.
So along with all the trees and loveliness, the property has a well with power to it, a septic tank, drain field and already has a partially cleared area for a house. It’s ready to build. Since the property is so close to the lake (the city’s drinking water supply) we are in the watershed and have to follow very strict rules and guidelines. We can only clear/disrupt the land from June 1st-Sept 31st, so we won’t be starting our building process until June 2017, which is fine as we are in no rush. We met with a builder for the second time today, finalized plans and bam! Signed papers for a house already! We will be doing most of the finishing work ourselves as my husband is a super handyman, it’s going to be a lot of work, but I look forward to really making it our own. Pinterest here I come!
Stay tuned for updates and house plans!
